Dave O’Hare, of Lopez Island, and Kate Schuman, of Shaw Island, will present their books and discuss the process of making children’s books from concept to publication and marketing. No registration required.

Dave O’Hare is author of Quigley Lopez, A Friend for Life, illustrated by Liesbeth Heikens.
Set on a small island in the middle of the Salish Sea, Quigley Lopez, A Friend for Life, offers readers, both young and old, a timeless lesson in what it means to trust and, ultimately, to love. Both gentle and kind, this is the first in a series of coming of age stories sure to warm the heart of anyone who has ever loved a dog and is destined to become a faithful companion for years to come.
When a little lamb refuses to behave like a sheep, leave it to Quigley Lopez to understand way.
Quigley Lopez, Saving Perseverance is the anticipated follow-up to last year’s award nominated, Quigley Lopez, A Friend for Life, a book Kirkus Reviews called, “A sweet, well-illustrated story of a happy dog and the bond with her owner.”
Dave O’Hare grew up in Northern California and spent 40 years as an award-winning advertising writer and creative director. That’s 280 years if he was a dog. So writing a couple of books about a dog, Quigley Lopez, A Friend For Life and Quigley Lopez, Saving Perseverance, makes perfect sense. And like Quigley, he now lives on an island off the coast of Washington with his wife, Yvonne. They’ve been married 217 years.
Kate Schuman is author of Desert Rose, illustrated by Wendy Dyer.
Kate Schuman, a Shaw Island resident, is an award-winning singer and songwriter. Her favorite career highlights include recording a CD of original music in Nashville; portraying Patsy Cline in San Juan Community Theatre’s 2009 production of “Always, Patsy”; winning first place in the West Valley CMA songwriting competition; and, along with her husband Jim, hosting music events on their Shaw Island lawn. Kate’s wry sense of humor pervades many of her songs, and when she was given the title Desert Rose as a songwriting challenge, she chose to tap into her experience as the former owner of a lively horse to craft an equally lively song!
About the Book Desert Rose
A cautious cowgirl in the market for a new horse believes she has found just the ticket in Desert Rose, a well-trained horse handed down from a rodeo pick-up rider. After a careful inspection of the horse’s conformation and attitude, she buys Desert Rose, congratulating herself on this lucky find, and prepares to ride her home. It will be a ride she and half the town will never forget! A QR code in the book links to a recorded-live version of the song Desert Rose.
